What is the name of the project?

Kingsmead Community Food Response

Can you tell us what it is and what you have been doing during lockdown?

For over 11 weeks Made Up Kitchen and Concorde Youth have been transforming surplus into abundance, cooking and delivering 1100 meals a week and 100 bags of fresh fruit and veg to our local community.

We improvise with surplus fruit and veg donated on the day and create 6-8 dishes that make up a food pack so people can mix and match meals to have more choice.

The dishes reflect our diverse neighbourhood, and many different parts of our community that may never have met before have come together to support and nourish each other.

What’s your opinion that food is more than something you just eat?

Cooking and sharing food is one of the simplest ways to show care, to support, to connect and find your way to be of service whilst also nourishing yourself.

We’ve been running “Peoples’ Kitchen” Community Feasts for years, inviting strangers to improvise a buffet banquet together, with the knowledge that everyone in the room has something to teach and learn…

Food is culture, belonging and comfort as well a basic need. There are dishes that will always remind you of home, and at a time when everything has felt challenging, we wanted to bring all of this through the food we provided to our neighbours.

What is the link with Concorde youth centre?

From the beginning we worked with Concorde Youth Centre and wanted to make a true community response, to provide opportunities to empower others to help make a positive mark.

What do they do for this project?
Young people from the area are involved directly in cooking food, packing and delivering meals, planting seedlings, filming and documenting what was going on and interviewing locals.

What is the crowdfunding campaign about?

We soon realised that we have young leaders in our neighbourhood, and young people who are striving despite lack of recourses, support and opportunities.

Providing food maybe at the heart of what we do but we wanted to cook up more solutions that provide long term change whilst championing the beauty and talent of our young people.

The “Young Leader’s Fund” is a way to create more resources for young people in the area. It’s not just about surviving the current crisis, it’s about surviving the crisis that is the future: Real change happens from providing computers so our young children can complete schoolwork, and filmmaking equipment so they can change the narrative of how young Black people are portrayed.

With systemic imbalances in our society it’s going to take each of us playing a part to create a fairer platform... This is our little part: We are asking each other to give a little... share more... so our future can be more...

Stranger than Fiction:
catching up with Bo Ningen on their latest album

It gets bandied around by music writers when they hear a slightly odd time signature, or a reference to Picasso in the lyrics. Clapton based band Bo Ningen however have spent their career using music to explore ideas that are normally the province of conceptual artists.

Since forming in 2007 around a Hackney Road rehearsal space, Taigen, Monchan, Yuki and Kohhei (all originally from Japan) have been combining noise rock, psychedelia kosmische musik and post-punk to create a sound that defies easy categorisation. They’ve collaborated with bands like Savages (on the 17-minute single ‘Words To The Blind’) and Faust, as well as figures in the art world such as Tim Noble and Sue Webster.

The band’s 4th album, ‘Sudden Fictions’ was released today and sees the band exploring new territory both sonically and conceptually. I caught up with the band’s drummer, Monchan, to chat about lockdown, collaborating with Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie and how the band are using theoretically physics to redefine their sound.

Hi Monchan, how're you doing? How have you and the rest of the band been coping with the lockdown?
It's good so far and I'm enjoying my personal time. Currently, I (Drums) and Taigen (Vocal/Bass) are in London, Yuki (Guitar) is in Stockholm and Kohhei is in Amsterdam and we are in different places but having fun individually.

I read the new album was recorded in London, Tokyo and LA. After those far flung sessions it must have been a shock to be totally stuck in London
We mainly recorded the album at Vox Studios in LA, also overdub/mastering at East West Studios and Studio 101 but many pre-productions in London and Tokyo so we were pretty much everywhere before the strange days started. It was like in a fictional movie and I was kind of panicking in the beginning. Two of my Japanese friends decided to go back to Japan immediately in 3 days before the border closure and I was thinking of going back to Japan too.

Your latest album 'Sudden Fictions' is out today, tell us a little about how the band has evolved since III came in 2014?

We've tried a lot of new things which have been nourishing and have brought substantial change to us. Active introduction of English lyrics, which Taigen says is like introducing a new instrument. How to effectively introduce a synthesiser and drum sampler as BO NINGEN and studies of pedals for distinctive sound making. The list goes on. I think our interest in being a live band became more an interest in the recording and to express the experiences, visions and thoughts that we have developed over the past six years.

I know Taigen's lyrics on this album are exploring concepts such as the "World line", how have these ideas bled into your music?

The ''World line'' is the path which an object traces in four dimensional spacetime. It is an important concept in modern physics, which we see as central to the ambitious theme of sonically recontextualising ourselves within the ‘’history seen as open structure’’ concept explored on the album.

You've had some excellent collaborators on this album, including Bobby Gillespie (Primal Scream) and producer Drew Brown (Beck, Atoms For peace), what was it like letting them into the Bo Ningen creative process?

It was an irreplaceable experience to work with them, like making a new sculpture we’ve never seen. There was a base which we made, and they brought many materials which we stuck on it, chiselled and polished together as if we were sculpting it. Then it became ‘’an unknown object’’ which has a different shape, texture and colour called ‘Sudden Fictions’. They gave us so many new awarenesses and we really appreciated them.

Before 'Sudden Fictions’ dropped you guys released a series of archive recordings, live and early demos, called 'A Found History', was it fun to go digging through older material while you were in lockdown?

It was the best time in the beginning of lockdown and good to refresh our minds, sort of a therapy. We amazingly found a lot of rarities and decided to reveal them to track our history named ''A Found History'' on Bandcamp. It's a side story of sonic fragments from the very beginning to just before the new album.

You're a band with an incredible live reputation (I saw you myself at Glastonbury 2017), are you guys looking forward to getting back on the road when you can?

Yes, totally. Each of us is doing something new, learning different instruments, working out hard at home, making new songs etc. Can't wait to play gigs and share the energy with people who love music.

Am I right in thinking all four of your live in London? How do you feel the city has fed into the music you make?

Three of us live around Clapton except Kohhei, he moved to Amsterdam last year but there are so many similarities in between the cities, I guess. Environment, culture, even food really affect our music life so I can't really imagine if BO NINGEN formed in Japan. We might be a totally different band, playing different music also could have much shorter hair... Quite many people say our music style is unique. Probably one of the main reasons is us subconsciously combining our origin with the experiences which we had in the UK/Europe.

If you could sum up Bo Ningen vibe or mission in one sentence, what would it be?

Our aim is to represent an alternative history.

Sudden Fictions is out 25th June 2020

We’re a neighbourhood workplace, designed to provide a professional work environment without getting on a bus or a train. We offer full office functionality in a design-led interior at a pragmatic price on a 3x month basis.

We also have a takeaway canteen, event space (with live streaming) and a fully-equipped conference room to hire. We sometimes moonlight as a lifestyle location too.

Where are you located?

Just one minute from Homerton station, on the ground floor of a residential block. We’re the first people to occupy the space since it was developed more than 4 years ago, and we’ve loved bringing it to life and getting to know our neighbours

Who is behind it?

Hannah Philp and Caro Lundin are ARC Club’s founders. Caro is an architect, responsible for everything from ARC’s brand to its furniture and mugs, and Hannah is a business brain with a passion for social causes. Lucy is the people person who heads up our Ops, while Ashley left a lifetime of freelancing to oversee our comms and strategy. You can look forward to meeting either Martin or Nina on site, welcoming visitors or putting their considerable photography and graphic design skills to use. Francis is three. He thinks ARC is Hannah’s house.

When is it opening?

We formally throw down the welcome mat on Monday 6th July - but our first members can use the space from this Monday. It’s three months later than we planned to open our doors but we feel lucky to be launching a new business at all at this time. The AllPress coffee machine gets cranked up every day from 9am. See you in the canteen!

Who is your target group?

People in Hackney who’ve had enough of working from home - whether they’ve got their own business or they're just waiting for their office to reopen. We’re proud to welcome anyone and everyone with a local perspective looking for a place to get their work done.

What kind of events are you planning?

Professional development, open workshops, shindigs - you name it. Anything we can think of to inspire and support our members, and champion talent, ideas and initiatives rooted in Hackney. We won’t be launching our events programme until September when social distancing is, we hope, over. But we can’t resist throwing a little Welcome Party for local residents from 2pm - 9pm on Sunday 26th. You are all invited.

Anything else please add:

We’re keeping members numbers down over the summer (in keeping with our very rigorous Covid-19 Action Plan) but there are still a few spaces left and we will be steadily increasing capacity during the year. If you’d like to come and work alongside us, visit our website and book a tour now.

Where are you based?

Glyn Road (just off Chatsworth Road), Homerton, East London

When was it established?

Back in 2015 - it was our 5th birthday during lockdown, the champagne is still on ice!

What kind of services do you offer?

We are a member's darkroom. Membership's can range from a day, month, to a year. Members get access to both Black and White, and Colour darkroom printing facilities; negative development facilities; scanner; and in the summer we run alternative photography workshops such a Wet Plate Collodion; Cyanotype; Pinhole and more!

Do you need to be a member and how do you become one?
Yes - for legal reasons to use our space you need to be a member. But, fortunately, you can be a member for just a day if necessary. All prices can be found on our website and start at £25 for half a day.

How have you adapted to the Covid-19 restrictions?

This has been a tricky one, and unfortunately to operate we have had to drastically reduce our capacity to a quarter of what it previously was. We now only allow a maximum of 5 printers to use the space in a day. Previously we could cater for 20. Additionally, you can only book 4-hour half-day sessions (no full-day sessions), and we are no longer open in the evenings. Hand sanitiser, as well as disposable gloves, are provided. We ask you to bring your own mask.

Our capacity has been drastically reduced by social distancing as we are a small place. But it is good to have the doors open finally. We will be keeping a close eye on Government updates, and when they relax, our capacity will increase.

Other events E5 Process do

This year, none! COVID!!!

But usually, we run annual exhibitions for all our members to showcase their work.

And as previously mentioned, we usually run a number of summer workshops.

That said, this year we had a three-week alternative photography festival going to be held at the E5 Darkrooms - unfortunately, this has been postponed to next summer.

Why do you prefer analogue photography?

Ha - where to start! If anything, we'd say the darkroom provides a fantastic opportunity to meet other professional photographers, as well as hobbyists... something you dont get when doing digital edits from home!

Anything else you want to add

We are working on setting up weekly film nights in our yard. A couple of quid on entry, bring some beers, and enjoy some art house films.

During 2020 it’s felt like the cliché about it being a curse to “live in interesting times” has been truly proven right. Everyone is living through something they would not have thought possible just one year ago and no one really knows how to go about it.

Hackney in general, and Chatsworth Road in particular, is a hotbed for small, independent businesses. So many local people have taken that leap of faith and set out to establish themselves with ventures ranging from lifestyles boutiques, to restaurants and salons to upholsters. Unfortunately it’s these brave and brilliant businesses that will feel the burden of lockdown a lot more than the chains and corporations of this world.

As of Monday the lockdown is cautiously easing off and we are starting to approach the new normal. With this in mind we caught up with some of the local shop owners and trades people to see what it means to them to be able to reopen and how they intended to keep safe whilst we’re still in the midst of a global pandemic.

One such business is Sweet Interiors, run by the uncle and niece team of Timothy and Amee. “It’s been really hard for all small independent businesses to be closed this long. We don’t run with a big rainy-day fund” Timothy Explains. “We kept ourselves busy with restoration and reupholstery work and selling on Instagram but having a chat with people is one of the best parts of having the shop, So we missed it. It’s been fantastic to get back a little normality since Monday. We are limiting the number of people we will be having in the shop at one time. Also we will take evening bookings if people wish to shop solo. Lots of cleaning surface in the morning and we have hand sanitizer for people to use when coming in or leaving. We have also made masks so we can wear those as well.”

For old curiosity shop Patina the reopening couldn’t have come at a better time as next week they’ll be celebrating their 4thBirthday as a business. “We are very happy to finally be able to open the shop again, we have missed the routine and all of our lovely customers. We’re doing our best to stay safe by supplying our customers with antibacterial gel and gloves, also we’re only allowing 2 people at a time to come inside.”

The lifestyle store Triangle had recently expanded their operation when coronavirus hit “Our newly opened children’s store A Small Triangle had a brief appearance for 3 weeks before lockdown and then sadly had to close” Owners Tory and Mary tell us. It’s very pleasing to see that this set back has not dampened their enthusiasm though, “We are beyond excited to be reopened in both stores and are looking forward to welcoming all our lovely customers big and small, old and new back through doors. We’ve missed everyone so much.... a huge thank you to all our amazing customers who have shopped online during the lockdown. We’ve enjoyed doing our local deliveries by bike, meeting you all at a safe distance on the doorstep, but it’s nice to be back in the shops.”

Another person who will have certainly missed his customers is Kev, the owner and sole employee of Jelly Records, Chatsworth’s own vinyl oasis. “It’s a nice feeling to be back open again. I have really missed the interaction with all my awesome customers and chatting breeze about music and records. To keep things as safe as possible hands must be sanitised on entry, maximum of 3 people at a time and gloves are available to those who’d like some.”

Rachel of Lifestyle boutique Hop of Hackney talked to us about how they’ve been keeping going during Lockdown, as well as their plans for reopening. “Even though our door has been closed during lockdown, it's been lovely doing local doorstep deliveries and sending presents to loved ones further afield on behalf of our customers. (Felt like a florist writing the cards some days) We now have our door open from Friday to Sunday and will continue to offer free local deliveries across the week. We've got all the hygiene measures you'd expect in place in store and will do our best, as always, to keep your little ones amused!”

It’s obvious to all concerned that keeping both staff and customers safe is going to be the priority for everyone, and Hackney Drapers are no exception. “Before opening, we undertook a risk assessment; all staff gave their input to establish a way to work as comfortably as possible” Store manager Tolani Moibi explains to me. “The highest priority being given to staff welfare, safety, and security. We led a lot of our safety amendments by their comfort, and the government guidelines. We have enforced a 2 person max in store at any time, compulsory use of anti-bac upon entry; safety posters and visual aids for 2m distancing instore; only accepting contactless; the cornering off of shop floor space for customers to enter and reduced contact with touching stock. This has extended to cleaning main touch points regularly throughout the day, not sharing devices, telephones, and equipment.”

Another thing that Tolani mentions seems to be true for all the Chatsworth Road businesses. “So many of our customers have popped in to show their support, and their delight that we are still here to open our doors.”

It has been the local community and the regular customers that have helped keep everyone going during the crisis, and it’ll be them who help them recover as we find our new way in the world. If you can; shop local and shop independent.

The skate park by Daubeney Fields was built in 1986, but over the years it started to crack up and the surface became very rough, so a passionate group of local skaters called Hackney Bumps Community decided to regenerate it. More work needs to be done but they can’t afford to pay out of their own pocket anymore, so they have started a crowdfunding. It is definitely a cause worth supporting and it’s worth mentioning that before corona hit they were teaching kids skating for free, which they will re-introduce once it is safe to do so. It is community project led by local people for local people. Plenty of more info, a clear breakdown of expenses and how to donate can be found here:

What is your name?

My name is Nicki Knightz, artist and fashion icon.

How long have you lived in Homerton?

Forever and an eternity, it feels like. Since the beginning.

How long have you been making music?

I started writing music when I was 15/16. Initially it was me making webcam videos (small written raps) for my small Facebook following.

That evolved to me then venturing into writing poetry as a way to express my thoughts and feelings. It wasn't until 15/16 that I'll say I started making music properly and actually doing recordings- thanks to my musical partner, Henny Knightz who had a bedroom studio.

The music I started making was trash. I hadn't fully mastered my skills of rapping in my early releases. I'd like to say I'm the best I have ever been lol. The music I make now I'd say is real, it's raw, it's refreshing and most importantly to me, it's freeing.

What are you launching on Sunday?

I'm releasing my second project 'For The Uninformed' following my last release 'Hate' in late 2018. A small but powerful piece of work put together by myself, Henny and my g 'Stopboringme'. A collection of stories for those who are/were uninformed.

Did you make it yourself or did you have collaborator on music and filming?

I wrote everything on the project. Henny Knightz produced the tape, 2 songs have bass guitar performed by Stopboringme. In regards to filming, the video I intended to do with the projects release was rescheduled. All I had was the project completed with not much else. No artwork, no press images/social imagery. But with the help of those around me, everything fell into place quite nicely. Nick Wotton helped me out by creating the artwork for the project, big up him. For socials, I went out and bought 2 Kodak Funsaver disposable cameras and got my girlfriend to take pictures of me with a borrowed England flag from Henny. I wanted my Instagram campaign to reflect the era/cultures I'm talking about within the project. I wanted to create that London late 80s early 90s feel , not posed but very natural. I made a little promotional video for the project with my friend Lauryn who acted out within it and who was keen to be apart of something I was doing. Literally over 3 days. Shot it on my iPhone, edited it and boom. The campaign was challenging but fun.

It’s lockdown and we need to use what we have. Tell us about how you are getting on making music with the restrictions.

When it first started, I wrote everyday more or less and was super motivated to walk out of this time with heaps of music. Fast forward in recent weeks and I've been feeling uninspired and de-motivated. However, I'm learning to be nicer to myself and not try to force the writing aspect yet be productive in other ways, still creatively.

What’s your favourite shops in the area?

Defo Paks. A key place that has been there throughout my entire hair journey, the good and the bad. Affordable and a wide range of products.

Any local artists you want to give a shoutout?

Of course my guy, Henny Knightz - my producer and best friend. He also makes his own music. Go check his new project RHOE out everywhere!

Anything else you want to say?

If you have got to the bottom of this, it must have been interesting. Follow my journey @nickiknightz on Instagram for style ideas lol and great music. A refreshing phenomenon from your area.

New EP by Clapton’s new talent
- and how his mum had to film his music video because of lockdown

What is your name?

My name is Henny Knightz, one half of the Knighthood Society.

How long have you lived in Clapton?

My whole life, Lower Clapton is home. I've seen it at its worst and I've continuously witnessed its potential to be great. Growing up here was always a strong sense of community. Everyone knew each other as children, there were no boundaries. Things got a little bleak around teenage years.

How long have you been making music?

I've been making music for 10 years now, well that’s when I first started writing. I was always quite introverted and shy, vocalised by the images I used to draw and things I used to design.

That was great for the time but there was a period when I fell into a dark place mentally and my only escape was through writing about it. It first started off as loose poetry, evolving into me battle wrapping my friend Caj via text message, culminating into me writing songs.

In the early days I used to (in my opinion) try to rap like a hybrid version of Lil Wayne mixed with Drake seasoned with Lupe Fiasco and Charles Hamilton then to be plated up with some Jay Z. I was horrid, but I could proudly say no one sounded like me. Whether that was a good thing or not is still one of the most debated topics in recent history. It started off with me using YouTube beats and hanging in studios like Rising Tide and a local group called 3OW's studio to try gain as much knowledge as I possibly could. After a while I got sick of using YouTube beats and because I was still such an audio anomaly no one wanted to produce for me. So I taught myself. Things started off fairly light hearted until my best-friend 'Caj Knightz' passed away, he came back from Uni and I was excited to show him that I started producing. He died before I ever got a chance to. My sound became darker then. First album I released was in 2015 called 'The Nelis Fitzgerald' all self-produced, mixed and mastered, a triumph. The moment when I felt people finally started to take me seriously. Then for a while I was creating, doing university and working on my fellow 'Knighthood' artist Nicki Knightz. 2017 I released my second project 'MCMXCIII Wednesday Addams' which worked as a brief collection of various emotions and production experiments I was toying with at the time. Which brings us to now.

What are you launching on Sunday 24th May?

Sunday I am releasing my third project called 'Random House of Evil'. It's me finally exploring what my depression is, I didn't want to sugar coat anything. I am who I am. From my production style to my voice. Unapologetically me, I had a lot of time to think and have a chance to soul search. Facing what I had stored away all these years. I also wrote a short story which can be accessed if you purchase the project via Itunes or Bandcamp. The 'Random House of Evil' is a metaphor for my mind. I wanted to reveal 6 rooms within it. The project and story explore those rooms further.

It’s lockdown and we need to use what we have. Tell us about how you made your video and how your mum got involved?

So originally I had put together a team to create this block buster visual experience that would had not only secured me an Oscar, but maybe even a star on the walk of fame. I was ready, years of planning, focus and saving, I could taste it. Then BOOM, stay indoors. I had faced so many setbacks leading up to this project that I decided that I can no longer wait for anyone or anything to put this together. I think my mum was also getting tired of me moaning about it so I began to plan. I know my project better than anyone else and thankfully I'm driven enough that I won’t let anyone/anything stop me from doing this. I bought some red suede fabric online and I gave my mum the run down. We don't have special lighting, or any experience in photography/film what so ever. It was actually the part in art school that I paid the least amount of attention to. Serves me right. Thankfully we had an old DSLR and my mum being supportive enough to become my team. She took hundreds of photographs for me and followed me around and added her creative input and flare into it.

Does she call herself a filmmaker now?

Haha let me answer that when the Oscar nominations come through.

Do you make the films yourself? like editing etc

I don't make films myself, well I hadn't before. Maybe the odd mess around on iMovie but nothing serious. I originally sent the clips to be edited by my friend and fellow artist Ivohé in Berlin. She did a rough edit then told me it'll be better if I just did it myself. So I sat on YouTube watching tutorials on premier pro, how to colour grade, add grain, you name it. I was also battling against the 7 day creative cloud trail time limit so it was a rough few days to say the least. One thing I can take away from this is a sense of pride though. Things fell through, but I was still able to endure and produce. That's why the Knight is in my name.

What’s your favourite shops in the area?

My favourite shops in the area would have to be Costcutter (Rushmore Road), they held us down during this lockdown. SZS, countless studio session was fuelled by the wings and chicken fillets from that shop. Pivaz when I feel like being fancy and A&S Cycles . It’s a shame they've closed now but I've always had bikes in my life and that was always the spot I went to for repairs, advise or specific tools I needed even recently me returning as a BMX rider it was nice to know I had that at arms reach [A&S Cycles has re-opened on Lower Clapton Road].

.

Any local artists you want to give a shoutout?

Yeah, Nicki Knightz. She's got a project coming out very soon which I produced alongside a creative genius called Amy Hurford. Very dope you've never heard anything like it.

Ivohé, even though she's in Berlin now when I met her she was very much a Hackney/Clapton resident. She's one of the most creative people I know.

Gotti Major, that’s my neighbour and he had one of my favourite projects of last year.

Anything else you want to say?

Hackney is here, no-one does it like us. Home of the individuals and if you don't know it now you will in due time.

Thank you mum for supporting me through this hard time.

Thank you Jørn and I Love Chatsworth road for this opportunity.

Canals are a key feature of London, but also one of its hidden pathways. It is easy to walk alongside them, admire the various boats and not realise the thriving community that canal boats are part of. In fact, few non-UK people are even aware of the canals and the homes they support. The canal that runs through through Hackney, links Hackney Wick, Hackney Marshes, branches off to Victoria Park and connects with the River Lea, it is ever an changing space of people and nature.

During the lockdown movement has been restricted for boaters who have made their home on the canals. Most boaters are ‘continuous cruiser’, which means that they need to move every two weeks. But, since lockdown these restrictions have been lifted and canal boats have been stationary for safety reasons, allowing people to self-isolate and organise themselves in the new environment we all found ourselves in.

This has also meant that specific canal boats have become familiar to Hackney’s permanent residents, as they take their daily stroll (or run, or cycle) and a constant is a nice thing during uncertainty for both land dwellers and boaters. It has also meant the canal community have got to know each other better, boater Hannah Pierce says “I’ve made a few friends for life during lockdown. It’s been very sociable across roofs.”

During this time many people have pivoted their businesses and taken on new projects and those on the water are no different. The canal life is a wonderful community, unique and diverse and is a special part of Hackney life. Here is a snapshot of some of those people that this artery of London supports.

Mitshel Ibrahim, head chef at Hackney canal side restaurant Ombra has adapted his business to become a pastificio and deli. They are offering collection and local delivery of fresh pasta, sauces, wine, groceries and of course tiramisu! They are also a collection point for Flouris Farm veg boxes.

Mitshel also lives on the canal, and has had his boat for four years with his girlfriend ceramicist Skye Corewijn. When lockdown happened, they were getting the boat blackened and so have been living off the canal for the last few months but loves the life the canal offers. “It’s definitely presents its own set of challenges, but Skye and I have had amazing adventures – it’s pretty magical” Mitshel says. “We’ve been able to live all over London, a different commute every two weeks; sometimes you wake up and you’re in Paddington Basin surrounded by businessmen and skyscrapers and a month later you’re on the river Lea making coffee in the morning looking over the marshes. It is tough, but you get good at making a fire in winter and the summers are long and we have lots of BBQs.”

Jenny and Kuba have started an organic nursery and growing centre currently residing by Hackney Marshes. They have been living on the canal for the last seven years; Kuba is a carpenter, who has done landscaping and has lots of experience growing food in Switzerland, and Jenny completed a growing traineeship at Stepney City farm in the last year “we think that growing your own food is an important thing to do both politically and for the environment” Jenny explains.

At the moment they are growing cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, golden courgettes, dark green courgettes and stripy courgettes, spinach, mixed salads, golden beetroots and Detroit beetroots, kale, rainbow chard. Their new seedlings include cantaloupe melons and a Siberian watermelon, one of the only varieties suitable for growing in the UK; soon they will have pumpkins and pickling gherkins.

“Many of our veggies are open pollinated, meaning you can save the seeds. As well various seedlings we will soon be selling summer salad boxes” Jenny says. Stay up to date with where they are on the canal and what they are growing @floatingveggies, and get your seedlings to start your own veggie patch!

Barge East is a floating bar and restaurant, permanently moored at Hackney Wick. It is owned by childhood friends Blandy, Ryan and Tommo who sailed this 114 year old Dutch barge from Holland to Hackney and restored it to its current glory. They have been closed until last week, when they began to test a takeaway and delivery menu operating out of their airstream – the trailer by their mooring. They have also been running a Crowdfunder to keep their 18 members of staff, which has done really well! Follow them on Instagram to be kept up to date on menus and operating hours. @bargeeast

Spotted across the waterways in Hackney have been small entrepreneurial boaters and independent businesses, some of which were part of the fabric of the canals before the lockdown, and some have sprung up since – selling coffees, fresh veggies or even free online yoga such as with @liamfrankbergin, from boatside to canalside.

With mooring exemptions coming to an end after this weekend, the boats will change, and everyone will get a fresh new landscape – keep a look out for all the is happening on our local waterways.

The Quarter Store is Hackney's newest home delivery food service and grocer. The name is a hybrid of war time quartermaster providing needed rations and a corner store. Shops we perhaps took for granted in the past - no longer.

Founder Max has always been a foodie, but it took lockdown to turn his passion into a business. He has set up several enterprises in his time and has worked in venture capital investing in startups so seen things from both sides of the coin. However in the lead up to launching he'd been freelancing and like so many suddenly found himself out of work as the ramifications of lockdown hit. This gave him the impetus to do something to help out locally.

"I wanted bread and coffee, and I wanted to support local businesses but it was difficult to get what I needed in one shop, with long queues and not knowing who was still selling or not."

Max's idea was based on combining local businesses into a single online store that people could come to. "The idea behind the Quarter Store was to bring local businesses together and help them to deliver. I reached out to a load of local business. I have around 20 now and now they are reaching out to me. The Quarter Store offers you the chance to buy from some of Hackney's best independent food brands."

The menu is mouth watering and gives you a real sense of the breadth of great food brands we are lucky enough to have in Hackney. Jam from Chatsworth Road's own London Borough of Jam, breads from E5 Bakehouse, pasta from Lu Tua Pasta, meats from Cobble Lane Cured. Washed down with some 5 Points Ale (or Agua De Madre for those looking to reduce their lockdown alcohol consumption.) Keeping up with the community feel, Agua De Madre sublet the front of their fermentary in Dalston to enable Max to run his business.

These businesses are the passions, dreams and hard graft of the people who run them, who have been so hard hit. A good example is Diletta, who just set up her Italian wine and olive oil business, Diwinegrapes in Netil Market when the lockdown was called. With the market closed, The Quarter Store has offered her a vital route to market.

The Quarter Store combines several trends that have come to the fore during these strange times. We are all far more community minded and The Quarter Store is only championing local brands, many so hard hit by corona. According to Max: "I could see the pain that was occurring in local food businesses, one of the hardest hit during lockdown. Many were attempting home delivery, but without established distribution channels or online marketing they were struggling to get the message out."

Deliveroo with its established supply chain and online platform was the obvious partner. It wouldn't make sense for individual businesses to use Deliveroo due to the margins it charges. However the costs of delivery shared made it far less punitive for the businesses involved. Max said: "Deliveroo offers the opportunity to share the delivery costs across all the businesses rather than one."

Another challenge is needing to rely on Deliveroo's fixed radius of delivery, within 3 miles of the store and Max is seeing demand from outside this area. This is something he'd like to look at in time. But so far the benefits far outweigh the downsides. The newness of the business is apparent talking to Max.

He said: "Operationally it's me and a few family and friends. We literally opened on Saturday with handwritten sings in the window, I am scrappy at the moment."

Most startups will tell you the business never quite goes in the direction you expect and one area that has surprised Max is the number of people who are using The Quarter Store as a physical shop, popping by to pick up produce direct. This is something that has coincided with lockdown measures easing. He's just promoting it through instagram and word of mouth which is clearly spreading fast.

His idea is very relevant for our times but in Max's view is would be "quite compelling" even if corona hadn't happened. According to Max: "If someone said you could buy everything in one go and support local businesses I think I would. People are more attuned to where they are buying food, wanting to support local, and people are finding solace in fresh bread. People are making it or buying it."

The Quarter Master's mission resonates with these times and the desire to support local is likely to be a trend that remains long after corona. That is one thing we should be grateful for.
